Don’t stare too long, it might make you dizzy! But believe it or not, that picture is not animated. It’s an optical illusion that gives viewers the sensation of movement. The concept is really nothing new, these types of pictures have been around forever. But one trend we’re starting to see a lot more in design is the use of such patterns in graphics. If you’ve ever used such a thing in any of your work, we’d love to see it. Send us your images and we’ll post them here.

Do you have any sources that show how to create art like this?

Your best bet is to use already determined principals and replicate them. I don’t think there’s anything specific out there that generates it automatically.

Google for “Op Art”, “Optical Art” or “Bridget Riley” for some examples from contemporary art.
