Pixelmator: Poor Man’s Photoshop

If it’s one thing we love here at EoC, it’s open source software. God knows software for those that actually buy it is ungodly expensive. Adobe’s latest creative suite for example, costs more than many of our first cars. If you’re looking for a low cost alternative, have a look at Pixelmator. It’s an open source alternative to Photoshop and boasts an absolutely stunning and beautiful interface. Many of the proposed features are very intuitive and offer a terrific compliment to applications like iPhoto and iLife. There’s no detailed information about a release date at the moment, but we’ll be sure to keep everyone posted once we hear more.

Wow, that looks very similar to Photoshop, I’ll definitely keep an eye on that. I love my Photoshop, but that looks pretty slick, I like the dark menus.

    It is not open source.

“It’s an open source alternative to Photoshop ”

It is not open source. It uses some open source libraries. (Image Magick) but nothing says the app will be open source.

Sadly. But still, $60 for something that can grow to beat photoshop. I’d imagine they should sell 100,000 copies (they could put up a meter), and then open source it, with a license that allows those who register it (for a fee) to join the pixelmator club, which gives discounts, offers and early releases to its members, as well as allows them to vote on new features.

    That would be best.

Open sourcing this app and keeping it polished would ensure that it could topple the proprietary nightmare of photoshop! (and don’t defend it, we have all gnashed our teeth at the state of graphics apps I’ve used it since 3.0, right up to CS2, hate GIMP, love Krita)

It’s not open source. It does use a couple of open source software libraries, but that’s all.

Looks damn cool though, I’m looking forward to taking it for a spin when it’s released =D
